Unit 2 Reflection

I definitely feel that researching and finding credible sources is something new I learned in this unit that I didn’t know before. Before I would usually use wikipedia or some random website and would consider their information to be correct or reliable but now I realized that people’s work isn’t always correct. Checking out the ccny archives was a pretty cool experience (I think that’s the name of it, it was on the fifth floor). I wasn’t able to go with the class but I was able to check it out by myself when I was at campus the other day. At first, I had a vague understanding of rhetoric and as I went through this unit, I’ve been able to have a deeper understanding of rhetoric and rhetorical strategies.

I was proud that I was able to write enough for this topic and I didn’t really write this in a standard essay type paper. For this paper, I organized my paper in 4 categories, rhetorical situation, rhetorical triangle, rhetorical strategy and effective or not effective. With this, it was easier for me to think of a way to write or get my creative juices flowing. If I were to revise the writing I did for this unit, I would’ve definitely chosen a different topic to write about as the animal rights movement was surprisingly a topic I didn’t have fun researching about.

For this unit, I would say I didn’t really participate or engage as much as I normally would due to me being injured so I was unable to attend class. However, the days I do manage to arrive at school, I’d say I participate a decent amount of times. Besides the engagement aspect of this unit, I would say that using the class notes and readings definitely did help out especially when writing a rhetorical analysis on this topic. With these notes, I found it easier to find out what type of rhetorical devices and strategies were possibly used by the speaker.

Compared to unit 1, unit 2 has given me an opportunity to write a paper in a different way, such as writing the paper in categories. I would list out the categories and then give explanations of them. I feel like the information and resources I have right now is enough for me to complete this unit. I don’t think there’s anything I would want you to change going forward.

  1. From this unit, I learned many new things that I have not known before. I learned many new rhetorical devices and forms of appeals that I have never even heard of! Distincto and Procatalepsis are the two new rhetorical devices that I was intrigued to learn about and be able to make examples about. Procatalepsis is a device that I already used, however, I did not know its name. This unit helped me clarify the meaning and the use of procatalepsis. Through the Historical Movements essay, I was able to learn about various historical movements throughout history and from there, I had the ability to choose the one that I wanted to learn about. I not only learned about the Civil Rights Movement (this is the topic that I wrote my essay about), but I also learned about movements throughout the Great Depression, The American Civil War, and more modern movements against recent elections and Supreme Court cases.

The strength of the writing that I did for this unit is the fact that I was able to identify rhetorical devices used by the supporters of the Civil Rights movement. I was able to identify the most effective rhetorical devices used in various papers/speeches that supported the movement. Through this analysis, I was able to highlight the motive behind these texts. If I had the ability to revise the writing I did for this unit, I would definitely fix the conclusion. I felt that the conclusion was the weakest part of my essay. Not only that, I would also love to add more evidence and examples of where rhetorical devices were used to support the Civil Rights Movement.

This unit, something that I did that helped me become successful is studying and memorizing most of the rhetorical devices that were assigned to me. This came especially handy during the MLK “Beyond Vietnam” speech annotations and even during the unit essay I was able to easily identify rhetorical devices used by the people to advance the movement. For me, this unit was more informative than the last unit. I felt like I was able to learn more about appeals, rhetorical devices, and forms of argument, unlike the last unit. But, something that I would like to do differently next unit, is having drafts before submitting our work, which is something that we will have. I feel like drafts really help me reflect upon my work and the areas it needs work in. I feel like this unit is good the way it is, and you should keep doing what you are currently doing.
