    Exercise 1–

    1. The hurricane down in Florida wasn’t too destructive

    – I checked up on my friend in Florida to see if he’s being affected by the hurricane and he said it’s not the best weather.
    – The food was not bad, which explains why there is none left over.
    – I complimented my friend’s painting, but she said it isn’t a Picasso.
    – My family and I drove eight hours to visit some family last summer, it was no pleasant journey.
    – My sister baked a cake, it was edible.

  12. A litotes would be someone who minimizes the severity of the weather by saying, “It’s not the worst weather we’ve ever had.” By denying the opposite of what is actually meant, this technique is used to emphasize or ironize a point.

    This technique is used to create emphasis or contrast by presenting two opposing ideas in a balanced or parallel structure, such as “We must learn to live together as brothers or perish together as fools,” as an example of an antithesis.
